We had more than 94 percent of our Indiana high school varsity head coaches become IBCA members for the 2022-23 academic year. Membership is a prerequisite to nominate for and receive awards, but perhaps more importantly on a personal level, current-year membership provides you with a $2 million dollar liability policy.
We need to strive to get 100 percent of our head coaches this coverage.
I also am concerned with the low number of assistant coaches, junior high coaches and elementary coaches who are registering as members to receive this protection. If you are a head coach, it is your responsibility to take care of the people who work in your program. If you do not have the money in your budget to register them and your athletic director will not do it, then please at least inform these coaches of the availability of IBCA membership and instruct them as to how important becoming a member is.
As we head into another season, at no time has there been more responsibility placed on our profession. We need to take responsibility for poor conduct on the floor. We cannot continue to model bad behavior and expect it not to filter into the stands or onto the playing floor. We are at a pivotal point in our game. We need to take control and responsibility for what it becomes.
Coach, your IBCA is here for you. Please contact us if we can be of any assistance.
Good Luck and, as said by Norman Dale, "Welcome to Indiana Basketball!"
