It is a stupendous honor to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. This is illustrated by the number of individuals that are on the list of distinguished candidates. It is an extremely difficult task to narrow the number of candidates to a workable list that will be evaluated further until the number of desired candidates is finalized. Perhaps you know of someone that should be nominated. It is too late for the current school year, but you are encouraged to nominate the candidate of your choice by August 2008.
Below are the general guidelines for the election process to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame:
Step 1:
Anyone can be nominated for consideration for induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame by filling out an application form. The candidate or any supporting fan can fill out the form. The form must be submitted to the Hall of Fame by the first of September.
Step 2:
The Board of Directors will hold an open meeting on a Thursday in late September. Basketball fans are welcome to attend and will be given a minute or two to speak in behalf of their favorite candidate. The Hall will make available a summary sheet contaning the highlights of each candidate’s athletic career.
Step 3:
Each of the Board of Directors and Directors Emeritus will be able to cast a ballot. The ballots will be tabulated and the 25 candidates receiving the greatest number of votes will have their name submitted to the Screening Committee.
Step 4:
The Veterans’ Committee shall recommend up to five names of those nominees who graduated from high school at least sixty years ago. The Committee will narrow the list to three candidates for further consideration.
Step 5:
A Screening Committee will meet and review the application forms. The Committee members will verify the candidates’ basketball accomplishments. In addition the Committee will look at such criteria as the candidates’ accomplishments in high school, college and the candidates’ life in general. Community activities, business success, character and other worthy accomplishments will be evaluated. Any candidate convicted of a felony will be disqualified due to not meeting the profile of good character that is desired of every inductee.
The Screening Committee will determine any team that won the state basketball championship and went the entire season undefeated. Such a team is eligible for induction 50 years after winning the state title.
The Screening Committee will recommend an approved list of nominees and teams(s) for consideration by the Anonymous Committee.
Step 6:
The Anonymous Committee shall recommend to the Director and the Director Emeritus, for induction into the Hall of Fame, between six and thirteen living or deceased nominees (at least one must have graduated from high school sixty or more years ago). In addition from the Anonymous Committee will recommend any team that qualifies for induction honors. Each person recommended to the Directors and Directors Emeritus for induction shall have received a majority vote from the Anonymous Committee.
Step 7:
The nominees submitted by the Anonymous Committee shall be elected and inducted by a majority vote of the Directors and Directors Emeritus. The vote will occur in November.
Coaches that do not have a basketball game on December 27 or 28 are encouraged to bring their team and enjoy the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic. All games are played at the New Castle Fieldhouse and this year’s field is as competitive as ever.
