A reminder that the 2024-25 season has brought significant realignment to the IHSAA state tournament series in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball and other sports. In sports that have four classes, the membership is dived via a percentage based system. The top 20 percent of schools in enrollment are in Class 4A, the next 25 percent in enrollment are in Class 3A, the next 25 percent in enrollment are in Class 2A and the final 30 percent in enrollment are in Class A.
This adjustment was decided by the IHSAA Executive Committee on June 22, 2023.
Sectional assignments for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years were announced by the IHSAA on April 30, 2024. Here are links to the assignments.
Another reminder: A change regarding the Tournament Success Factor (Rule 2-5) also goes into effect in 2024-25. New language requires that a school’s performance and points accumulated in a two-year span will be looked at annually (instead of every two years). Starting this season, data from the previous two years will be reviewed and considered annually before making a determination.
Lastly, this is a reminder about the added “moratorium” days for the summer of 2025. The “regular moratorium week” continues in 2025 as it long has been – one week that includes July 4. For 2025, that is June 30 through July 6. The new part for 2025 is that each school is to select five additional days of “no contact” between coaches and athletes during the IHSAA’s summer season. The added five days must be a Monday through Friday, not a Saturday or Sunday.
These may be five individual days or five consecutive days.
- Example: 7/7 through 7/11 would be five consecutive days.
- Example: 6/20, 6/27, 7/11, 7/18 and 7/25 would be five Fridays.
How does this affect basketball coaches?
If one of your school’s day(s) is:
- June 13 or June 14 (girls Charlie Hughes Team Showcase), you would NOT be able to participate on that day
- June 20-21-22 (boys’ Charlie Hughes Team Showcase) you would NOT be able to participate that day
June 12 (Girls Top 100 Underclass Showcase) and June 27 (Boys Top 100 Underclass Showcase) are not affected as these events are for individual players. However, coaches would not be able to attend or have contact with their player at the Top 100 Underclass Showcase event if one of these days is part of your moratorium.
Coaches are encouraged to have a conversation with your Athletic Director and offer your thoughts about when you would like to see these five days take place, or NOT take place, during June and July.
A Columbus North player elevates for a shot near the rim during a past season. Virtually all coaches (and players) would like such high percentage opportunities during the 2025 state tournament series.
