Congratulations to the 2011-12 Bob King Award winners as Boys' Coaches of the Year.
Al Gooden
New Haven - District I
Al Gooden is a District 1 Coach of the Year after guiding New Haven to a 17-4 record in his first season with the Bulldogs.
Gooden has had outstanding success over the years, compiling a 355-218 record in 24 seasons, including a 321-180 mark in 21 seasons at Harding in Fort Wayne. His stint with the Hawks featured five trips to the IHSAA State Finals, highlighted by the 2001 Class 2A state championship.
A 1977 graduate of Fort Wayne Wayne High School and a 1981 graduate of Ball State University, Gooden began his varsity coaching career in 1988 at Heritage.
Two years later, he moved to Harding and orchestrated one of the state’s best teams there for more than two decades. Four state runner-up finishes – 3A in 2002, 2A in 2005, 2A in 2006 and 3A in 2008 – joined the ’01 state crown.
He also served as an Indiana All-Star assistant coach in 2005.
Gooden and his wife, Felicia, have three children – Albert Jr., Alicia and Ashley.
Chris Johnson
Homestead - District I
Chris Johnson of Homestead is a recipient of District 1 Coach of the Year honors following a 23-3 season that included Northeast Hoosier Conference and sectional championships.
A 1983 graduate of Brookville High School and a 1988 graduate of Ball State University, Johnson has been the Spartans’ coach for 13 seasons and has compiled a 181-105 record with two sectional titles during his tenure. He previously was coach from 1994-99 at Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, where his teams won two sectionals and one regional while going 80-35.
Johnson’s overall record is 261-138 in 18 seasons. He was named an IBCA District Coach of the Year in 2010, and he will serve as an assistant coach for the 2012 Indiana All-Stars.
Prior to becoming a head coach, Johnson played at Brookville and worked with two fantastic head coaches in Paul Frye at Cincinnati Elder from 1989-1992 and Jim East at Merrillville from 1992-1994. While an assistant under these coaches, Johnson was a part of three sectional and two regional championships.
Johnson is also fortunate to gain knowledge and ideas from his brother, Mark Johnson, head coach at South Bend Riley who has won more than 340 games and multiple sectional and regional championships.
Johnson and his wife, Nicole, have two children – Jade, 21, and Macy, 18.
Scott Heady
Carmel - District II
Scott Heady recently completed his second season as coach at Carmel and 23rd year of coaching basketball at the high school level. His 2011-12 team posted a 23-4 record, including Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, sectional, regional, semistate and state championships.
His career record in 17 seasons as a high school head coach is 249-144.
A graduate of Shenandoah High School and the University of Indianapolis, Heady began his head coaching career in 1993 at Connersville. He guided the Spartans for two seasons before moving to Warren Central, where he directed the Warriors to two MIC titles, three sectional championships and one regional title over 13 seasons. His 1999-2000 squad won Marion County Tournament, sectional and regional crowns, and he was an IBCA District Coach of the Year that season.
Heady then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Anderson University, helping the Ravens to a 23-6 record, a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Division III berth in 2009-10. He then returned to Carmel, where he teaches in the school’s physical education department.
Following college, Heady was an assistant coach to his father, Bob, for six seasons at Carmel. The highlight of that tenure was helping the Greyhounds reach the State Finals in 1993.
As a player, Heady led his Shenandoah team to the 1981 State Finals and later was a two-year co-captain for UIndy. He was chosen to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2006 Silver Anniversary Team.
Heady and his wife, Amy, have three sons – Clayton, Sam and Luke.
Brian Satterfield
Hamilton Southeastern - District II
Brian Satterfield recently completed his 11th season as coach at Hamilton Southeastern, where he has compiled a 176-74 record and is the school’s all-time winningest coach.
A 1986 graduate of Plainfield High School and a 1990 graduate of Wabash College, Satterfield’s Royals posted a 22-3 record in 2011-12, won a school-record 17 consecutive games, claimed their third consecutive Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship and took the title in the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic.
Satterfield previously was named an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year in 2002-2003 and coached in the Indiana Class All-Star Classic in New Castle in 2010. He also has been named HCC Coach of the Year for the 2002-2003, 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons.
Satterfield and his wife, Deb, have three children – Brooke, 12; Nolan, 8; and Blair, 4.
Bryan Hughes
Barr-Reeve - District III
Bryan Hughes of Barr-Reeve has had extensive success and is a District 3 Coach of the Year. He guided his 2011-12 team to a 20-3 record and has a 334-138 mark in 20 seasons with the Vikings.
Overall, Hughes has a 447-186 record in 27 seasons, including 11 conference, 11 sectional, three regional and three semistate crowns.
Previously he coached three seasons at North Vermillion and four at Fountain Central, compiling 39-28 and 74-21 records at those schools. He also was an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year in 1991 and an Indiana All-Star assistant coach in 2003.
Hughes is a 1978 graduate of Covington High School and a 1982 graduate of the University of Indianapolis. He has bachelor’s degrees from UIndy and Indiana State as well as a master’s degree in business education from Indiana State.
He played basketball, football, baseball and tennis in high school and was a three-year basketball letterman and two-year captain at Indianapolis.

Stacy Meyer
Greensburg - District III
Stacy Meyer is an IBCA District 3 Coach of the Year following a 23-1 campaign that included the state’s only undefeated regular-season team in 2011-12.
In six seasons with the Pirates, Meyer’s teams have gone 92-46 while capturing three sectionals, one regional and two conference titles at his alma mater.
Meyer has a 150-102 mark in 11 seasons as a high school head coach. He previously coached two seasons at Southwestern (Shelby), guiding the Spartans to a Class A state runner-up finish in 2003, and three seasons at Whiteland.
Meyer graduated from Greensburg in 1990 and played basketball for four seasons for coach Phil Snodgress. While in high school, Meyer scored more than 1,000 points and helped the Pirates win two conference and two sectional championships. He went on to star at Hanover College, playing for coach Mike Beitzel, again topping 1,000 career points and helping the Panthers earn berths in the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Meyer is married to Jennie; the couple has 12-year-old twin daughters, Ashlynn and Bailey.
