2011-12 Championship coaches
Boys
Class 4A: Scott Heady, Carmel. Heady guided the Greyhounds to a 23-4 record and they defeated Pike 80-67 in the state championship game. Heady is 33-17 in two seasons at Carmel and 249-144 in 17 seasons as a high school head coach. He previously coached at Connersville and Warren Central. Heady is a graduate of Shenandoah High School and the University of Indianapolis.
Class 3A: Pete Smith, Guerin Catholic. Smith’s Golden Eagles went 24-5 and topped Norwell 64-48 in the state championship game. Smith is 102-52 in eight seasons at Guerin Catholic, and he has a 286-205 record in 21 seasons as a high school head coach. He previously coached at Manchester, Noblesville, Penn and Carmel. Smith is a graduate of Rochester High School and Bethel College.
Class 2A: Ed Schilling, Park Tudor. Schilling’s Panthers went 25-2 and topped Bowman Academy 79-57 in the championship game. Schilling is 66-15 in three seasons at Park Tudor and 144-94 overall in 10 seasons as a high school head coach (31-33 in three years at Western Boone and 47-46 in four years at Logansport). He had a 75-93 record in six seasons as coach at Wright State University. He also has been a NBA assistant for the New Jersey Nets and a college assistant at Memphis and Massachusetts. Schilling is a 1984 graduate of Lebanon High School and a 1988 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Class A: Mike Wagoner, Loogootee. Wagoner directed the Lions to a 22-4 season that included a 55-52 victory over Rockville for the state championship. Wagoner has gone 67-23 in four seasons at Loogootee after previously serving the school as an assistant coach. Wagoner is a 1977 graduate of Loogootee and a graduate of Averett College in Virginia.
Girls
Class 4A: DeeAnn Ramey, North Central. Ramey guided the Panthers to a 23-5 record in her first season as head coach at North Central, including a 50-48 victory in overtime over Columbus North for the state championship. She previously coached seven seasons at Richmond, compiling an 80-60 record and directing 1997 Miss Basketball Lisa Shepherd. Ramey, now 103-65 in eight seasons as a head coach, also has been an assistant coach at Roncalli, Mooresville, Richmond and North Central. She is a graduate of Mooresville High School and Marian University.
Class 3A: David Miller, Fort Wayne Concordia. Miller led the Cadets to a 21-5 record and they defeated Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 42-39 in the championship game. He has compiled a 145-66 record in nine seasons at Concordia and holds a 325-158 record in 22 seasons overall, including 13 at Bellmont. Miller is a graduate of Bellmont High School and Concordia University in Seward, Neb.
Class 2A: Steve Goans, Evansville Mater Dei. Goins directed the Wildcats to a 27-1 mark that included a 56-52 win in overtime over Fort Wayne Luers for the state championship. Goans has posted an 81-35 record the past five seasons at Mater Dei and has a 153-118 mark in two stints with the Wildcats totaling 14 years (he has coached the team from 1980-89 and from 2007-present). Goans is a 1976 graduate of Mater Dei, and his teams won sectionals in 1986, 2010 and 2012.
Class A: Scott Kreiger, Fort Wayne Canterbury. Kreiger guided the Cavaliers to a 25-2 record, including a 64-54 victory over Northeast Dubois in the championship game. His overall mark in 14 seasons with the Canterbury girls was 251-88, including previous state championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Beginning in 2012-13, Kreiger is taking over as the Canterbury boys basketball coach. Kreiger is a 1983 graduate of Columbia City High School and a 1988 graduate of Manchester College. He previously was a girls basketball assistant for 14 years at Columbia City and coached the 2012 Indiana Girls All-Stars.
