The IBCA will choose all-state teams in four general categories in 2022-23 – Senior Boys, Underclass Boys, Senior Girls and Underclass Girls. Within each category, four groups of honorees will be selected.
- IBCA Supreme 15 All-State (top 15 players, regardless of the class of a player’s school)
- IBCA Large School All-State (15 players from Class 3A and Class 4A schools, not on the Supreme 15)
- IBCA Small School All-State (15 players from Class A and Class 2A schools, not on the Supreme 15)
- IBCA Honorable Mention All-State (a list of about 85 players)
Ultimately, approximately 260 boys and 260 girls will receive honors through this process. That will be 130 seniors and 130 underclass players per gender.
For 2022-23, the IBCA will use two 20-member panels of coaches (one panel for boys, one panel for girls) to identify All-State candidates and collect information about them. The panel of coaches will include 16 members of current-year regionals – four representatives from each class (4A, 3A, 2A and A). The panel also will include three at-large members (one from each IHSAA District) and the committee chairman.
Coaches are to nominate players for consideration via the online nomination form at a specified time late in the season. Coaches must be a current-year IBCA member to have access to the nomination form. Coaches need to enter complete statistical data for their own players to give them the best chance for consideration.
Varsity Head Coaches will receive an e-mail reminding them to nominate players; again, coaches must be a current-year IBCA member in order to nominate players.
The members of the All-State panel will review nominees and forward the top candidates to a committee chairman for compilation. The respective full committees will meet in late February (girls) and late March (boys) to discuss candidates and vote to select players for various honors. The IBCA All-State Teams will be announced shortly after those meetings (Feb. 26 for girls, March 19 for boys).
David Wood of West Lafayette is the chairman of the IBCA’s Boys’ All-State committee. Doug Springer of Northridge is chairman of the IBCA’s Girls’ All-State committee. The committees will have one rep each from Sectionals 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-16, 17-20, 21-24, 25-28, 29-32, 33-36, 37-40, 41-44, 45-48, 49-52, 53-56, 57-60 and 61-64. There also will be three at-large appointments (one from each IHSAA district), plus the committee chairman. Both committee lists will be posted when they are finalized on the IBCA web site so that coaches from all schools will know which committee member represents their school in the player-identification process.
Franciscan Health Sports Medicine partnered with the IBCA in 2021-22 and will continue to do so in 2022-23 as the presenting sponsor for the IBCA All-State Teams. Franciscan Health Sports Medicine will provide plaques to Supreme 15 honorees and certificates to honorees of other All-State levels.
