Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame report

Matt MartinThe 2022-23 basketball season is approaching quicker than we realize. With that, there come the great sounds of basketballs bouncing in gyms and the fans cheering on their team to a victory.

Many new coaches will be pacing the sidelines this season, and the staff at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame wishes every team good luck this upcoming season. Like those teams with new coaches, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame has a new Executive Director in Matt Martin. His hiring became official on June 16 and, for those who do not know, Matt spent the last eight years as the athletic director at Knightstown High School. Before that, he was a teacher and basketball coach at North White, Daleville and Perry Meridian high schools.

Chris May cannot be thanked enough for all his work, effort and dedication to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame the past 13 years. Chris provided the Hall of Fame with tremendous leadership and guidance while expanding the membership and footprint within the walls of the museum. So thank you, Chris – for your 13 years of leadership to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. You will definitely be missed.

In addition to Matt being in the Hall of Fame office, the other full-time staff you might encounter would be:

  • Assistant Director Kayla Kessler (who just welcomed her third child and first son, Luka, to the world on Aug. 24)
  • Operations Manager Cheryl Betten
  • Developmental Director Trip Lukemeyer

We also have numerous part-time employees and countless volunteers who help on a daily basis.

In basketball news related to the Hall of Fame, another Raymond James Hall of Fame Classic will take place on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 at New Castle Fieldhouse. The lineups for these tournaments are:

As an IBCA member, we are asking for your support by becoming an annual member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for 2023. The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is the finest high school Hall of Fame in the world. This is possible because of the support of people who have lived Indiana high school basketball, including coaches such as you. Your involvement is important to us, as current high school coaches will be needed to step into leadership roles as the future guardians of the history of Indiana high school basketball.

Indiana was the first state to have a facility dedicated strictly to high school basketball. We continually receive praise from our visitors – from Indiana and beyond – drawing comparisons to or praise greater than the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Massachusetts!

As with all facilities, the cost of operating, maintaining and now replacing parts of our building continue to rise. We have been very fortunate that our facility in New Castle still is in good condition. But with age, there come added costs. Thanks to the generous support of our 2022 membership campaign, we recently have been able to upgrade our exhibits, add new and exciting graphics as well as work on extending our physical footprint.

Basketball has played a very important role in the lives of many Hoosiers. Your annual membership makes you part of the team that sustains our museum as the finest high school basketball museum in the world. As part of our web site, you may make online membership contributions or donations.

Please join by completing our online membership form at https://www.hoopshall.com/forms/annual-membership-payment/ or print and return the attached membership form with your Tax-Deductible gift (note the active coach membership rate of $25 is only available by brochure, not online). Be sure to check the benefits listed on the membership form.

Our gift shop also is available through the web site. Please see these items and plenty of Indiana basketball history at www.hoopshall.com.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the Hall.

– Matt Martin, executive director
