IBCA membership dues for 2020-21  
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the loss of revenue due to canceled events and the loss of corporate partnership cash, it has become necessary to raise IBCA membership dues to $35 per coach for the membership year.

The IBCA began a Mentoring Program during the 2019-2020 season with the intent of making it bigger and better in 2020-21.

Join the IBCA  
In order for a player from your school to be eligible for selection to an IBCA All-State Team, the IBCA Academic All-State Team or to win a Marion Crawley, Junior Mannies or Pat Aikman scholarship award, you must be a current-year-member of the IBCA.

The ‘new’ IBCA Challenge Cup  
The IBCA calendar in 2020-21 again will include a Challenge Cup event, but it will be a “new,” Indiana-only IBCA Challenge Cup. The new format of the event will feature teams from northern Indiana against southern Indiana.

January is ‘Coaches vs. Cancer’ month  
January once again has been designated as “Coaches vs. Cancer” month by the IBCA for high school basketball in Indiana. Indiana basketball teams have raised more than $1.1 million to benefit cancer charities in the first 13 years of this initiative.

New varsity coaches for 2020-21  
From the beginning of last season through late September 2020, 170 schools have hired as new varsity basketball coaches in Indiana – 81 to boys’ basketball positions and 89 to girls’ basketball positions – for the 2020-21 season.

Initial-eligibility requirements for college-bound student-athletes  
Many high school athletes aspire to one day compete in college athletics. Academic performance at the high school level is often an early question that college coaches ask about when considering a prospect from the high school level. Remember, it is “student-athlete” and not just “athlete.”

All-Star Report By Mike Broughton
My second year as games director of the Indiana All-Star basketball program did not go as expected, to say the least. Still, plans are for the 2021 Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games to be played on June 11 at a Kentucky site and June 12 at Southport Fieldhouse.

Liability insurance coverage at $2 million again in 2020-21  
As a membership benefit, coverage is provided by the Commercial General Liability Policy issued to the National Organization of Coaches Association Directors. This policy will protect the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and its active members.

IBCA All-State teams for 2020-21  
The IBCA will choose all-state teams in four general categories in 2020-21 – Senior Boys, Underclass Boys, Senior Girls and Underclass Girls. Within each category, four groups of honorees will be selected.

The IBCA would like to thank all of its corporate partners for their support of our professional organization. These partnerships have made it possible to increase the scholarship amounts for deserving student-athletes and to add various other functions for coaches and athletes.

IBCA/IHSAA college exposure events  
Some top players with returning high school eligibility in the state were invited to the 18th annual IBCA/IHSAA Underclass Showcase events for boys and girls in 2020. However, both events and the Boys' Team Showcase ultimately were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Plans are to resume these events in a “normal” way in 2021.

New speakers added to 2020 Virtual Clinic, not too late to register for it. Looking ahead: 2021 IBCA Clinic dates set for April 23-24 at Lawrence North.

Junior Mannies / Marion Crawley / Pat Aikman Scholarship info  
In 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the IBCA awarded only 11 seniors in the amount of $500 each. In previous years, about 40 seniors each received grants of $750 each. If funding for the scholarship program allows, the IBCA would like to return to the earlier level of awards (both in number and amount) for the 2020-21 school year.

Al Gooden of Lawrence Central and Donna Cheatham of Scottsburg have been chosen as Indiana’s nominees for the National Federation of State High School Associations national basketball coaches of the year.

2019-20 Championship coaches  
Brief biographies of the four girls’ state championship coaches from the 2019-2020 season. The boys’ tournament was halted at the end of sectional play, so no boys’ state champions were determined in the 2019-2020 season.

NFHS rule changes for 2020-21:  
Game forfeiture process clarified in 2020-21 basketball rule changes; other changes are that no warning is required before a technical foul is given and the timer's were addressed for a 15-second interval to replace a disqualified or injured player.

About 100 high school boys and girls will have the opportunity to win IBCA Player of the Week recognition in 2020-21. This is the 13th season of the IBCA Player of the Week program.

These are challenging times for all of us, and while there is still a lot of uncertainty, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame remains committed to recognizing Indiana’s basketball legends and providing for the future of basketball in this state. Hoosier Basketball Magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary issue last season. Now, this fall, even with the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a 51st annual issue of Hoosier Basketball Magazine published for the 2020-21 season.

Sixty of Indiana’s best senior boys and 60 of Indiana’s best senior girls will be invited to participate in Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s 2021 Top 60 Senior Workouts held in conjunction with the IHSAA and the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
